How We Handle Flat Roofing

Most flat roof failures trace back to poor detailing at the edges, outlets and upstands rather than the membrane itself. We specify the system around the roof you actually have, then detail every junction properly.

EPDM is the modern default for most extensions and garages — a single seamless rubber membrane with a typical 20–30 year service life. GRP fibreglass gives a hard-wearing, walkable finish in a choice of colours. Where budget or heritage considerations point to felt, we install high-performance reinforced systems rather than the old three-layer material that earned flat roofs their reputation.

Flat Roofing — Common Questions

How long does a flat roof last?
A properly installed EPDM rubber roof typically lasts 20–30 years, and GRP fibreglass similar or longer. Older three-layer felt roofs often fail within 10–15 years, which is why we rarely recommend them.
Is a flat roof more likely to leak?
Not when it's detailed correctly. Leaks usually come from poor falls causing standing water, or badly finished junctions at edges and outlets. We address both as standard.
Can you walk on a flat roof?
GRP fibreglass is designed to be walked on and is ideal if you need access for maintenance. EPDM tolerates occasional access but benefits from a protective walkway if used regularly.
