How We Handle Repointing
Mortar is the sacrificial part of a brick wall. It's designed to weather first so the bricks don't, but after enough Kent winters it erodes to the point where the joints stop shedding water and start taking it in. That's when you see damp patches inside, spalled brick faces, or frost damage appearing after a cold snap.
The mistake to avoid is a hard modern mortar raked over the top of an old wall. It looks fine for a few years, then traps moisture inside the softer bricks, which then blow. We match the mortar to the age and hardness of the existing brickwork — lime-based mortars for older and softer bricks, stronger mixes only where the brick can take them.
We also repoint roof ridges, verges and hips, where failed mortar lets water straight into the roof space.

Repointing — Common Questions
- How much does repointing cost?
- It depends on the area involved and the access needed, so we survey before quoting. Ring us on 07488 962 796 and we'll come out, look at the wall and give you a fixed written price.
- Why is my mortar crumbling?
- Usually age combined with weathering — frost is particularly hard on old mortar. Once joints are recessed enough, water sits in them rather than running off, and the decay accelerates. Repointing early is much cheaper than repairing bricks.
- Do I need lime mortar or cement?
- It depends on the brick. Older and softer bricks need lime mortar, which is more flexible and lets the wall breathe. Hard cement mortar on soft brick traps moisture and causes the brick faces to blow. We assess this at the survey.
